Welcome to the Earthtribe Website!

The Earthtribe is a nature-based healing community. We gather to expand our awareness and compassion through our deeper connection with the fields of nature and the web of life. We drum, chant, sing and dance – basking in the support of a loving community, including humans and all aspects of the Sacred Web. We have also integrated the practices and wisdom of the world religions and other meditational and spiritual practices.

The rituals and ceremonies that we practice are the sweat lodge, the vision quest and the earth dance.

We have three lodges:

  • The Owl Eagle lodge which gathers at a ranch near Columbus, TX
  • The Flying Buffalo lodge which is on property near Wimberley, TX
  • The Hawk Mouse lodge in Massachusetts

Each lodge in Texas has a sweat lodge every month. The Vision Quest is once a year in the spring and the Earth Dance is yearly in the fall.

We are a spiritual community of the Center for Creative Resources, Inc, (CCR), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The Earthtribe is a nature-based healing community. For that reason, we focus all our energies on healing practices at gatherings.

We adhere to these guidelines:

    • We agree to abstain from, or be under the influence of, alcohol, plant-based or other mind-altering substances at our gatherings.
    • We agree to abstain from the recreational use of tobacco via smoking or vaping. Tobacco is reserved for sacred ceremonies.

Sweat Lodge

Sweat lodges have been used by Native Americans for thousands of years and are part of many cultures’ spiritual practices. The structures are dome-shaped and often made from natural materials, such as saplings, blankets, and canvas tarpaulins. The lodges are built to contain steam and are considered sacred spaces that symbolize the womb of Mother Earth, connecting participants with nature.

Sweat lodges have been used for cleansing, purification, and spiritual communion. For example, the Lakota refer to the sweat lodge purification rite as inipi, which means “to live again”. Participants believe that the ceremony helps them shed physical and non-physical impurities, and that they may receive visions that guide their future or deliver messages for the greater good. Some say that sweating can also help the body eliminate toxins and impurities.

Logistically, heated rocks are carried respectfully from the ceremonial fire into a hut-like structure. The rocks are placed in a hole in the center of the lodge “sipapu” (place of emergence). The participants crawl into the inipi on all fours in a clockwise direction and sit in a circle around the glowing rocks.  The Pipe Carrier leading the lodge leads the participants in prayer around the four cardinal directions, East, South, West and North.  Upon completion we crawl out backwards the way we came in.

Vision Quest

The vision quest has been used traditionally by Ancient cultures and Native American tribes as a transformative method to seek direction for life and as a doorway to enter spiritual realms.

Retreating into nature in solitude, removed from the distractions and trappings of modern life, the vision quester opens to a heightened state of awareness.

An Earthtribe vision quest is held in April of each year and there are usually 8 people who quest. We camp out, spend time in nature, pray, laugh, hike and support the vision fasters and each other.

In the Earthtribe, a Vision Quest is a three-year process under the direction of an experienced guide.

  • The first year, the vision quester must attend the Vision Quest encampment as a general supporter.  The supporters maintain the encampment and community during the quest.

  • The second step begins when the seeker declares the intention to quest. It is a year of preparation and purification of body, mind and spirit. The vision faster spends  time in nature and prayer, paying attention to how the vision quest is showing up in daily life.  This culminates in fasting and sitting out in nature anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the previous experience of the vision faster.

  • The third year is spent processing the Vision Quest and integrating it into one’s life.  The vision quester gives back to the community by sharing aspects of the vision received that may benefit the tribe.

Earth Dance

The Earthdance is a time when we acknowledge we are not only part of the Earth: we are the Earth in varying levels of awareness and compassion. We dance to raise the level of awareness and compassion of Earth Herself. Come expecting moments of sacred focus through awareness dances, outright laughter, fun, in depth exploration, and a deep honoring of all creatures great and small. We celebrate and honor each direction by having various tribe members volunteer to “dance” a direction. We dance the first four directions of the East, West, South, and North the first evening and we dance the directions of the Earth, Sky, Relations, and the Ancestors the second evening. This is a time to reflect on your place in the larger community of plants, animals, insects, etc. We invite you to listen to what the earth is calling you to do. We are at a critical juncture in the human/Earth story and the Earth is asking if you can do something to assist her in her time of need.
